Introduction to Ampersand Claybord
Claybord is the panel that started it all! We call Claybord "The Ultimate Multimedia Panel” because it’s our most versatile panel and works wonderfully with mixed media techniques.
Claybord begins with Ampersand's premium Hardbord, sealed with our Archiva-Seal™ before we apply our simply amazing kaolin clay ground! Claybord is sanded to an ultra-smooth finish so you can achieve incredible details. This unique clay ground allows you to manipulate pigments and etch in details unlike any other surface on the market.

For example, when working with ink, graphic markers, pencils, and thin applications of paint, you can scratch through the application to add contrast, texture, and details.

You can even completely erase the material from the surface with oil-free steel wool or a very fine sandpaper, without affecting the integrity of the surface.
Andrea Pramuk, Butterfly, alcohol ink on Ampersand Claybord
Claybord’s exceptional clay surface is a favorite for both graphic and fine artists and works with almost any media. Claybord is the perfect surface for alcohol inks because of the way the clay ground disperses the ink.
Mark Meunier, Abby, egg tempera on Ampersand Claybord
This is also the surface of choice for egg tempera painters and airbrush artists due to its absorbent and ultra-smooth finish. Airbrush artists can etch in detail impossible on paper or canvas.
It's also perfect for graphite, printmaking techniques, and mounting. For artists familiar with oil painting on less absorbent coatings such as acrylic gesso or oil ground Claybord's highly absorbent finish may come as a surprise because oil paint will soak rapidly into its absorbent ground.
Louise LeBourgeois, Windy Day Seahorse Clouds #532, oil on Ampersand Claybord
However, Claybord can be used successfully for oils by either oiling out the surface before painting or by applying your oil paint in thin glaze layers.
Due to its absorbency and smooth finish, Claybord’s clay coating is similar to the clay and gesso grounds used during the Renaissance. When your artwork is complete, simply apply a fixative coating over your masterpiece (even if you used graphite or gouache) and display it without glass. You can’t do that with paper!
Claybord is available in a wide range of standard sizes, from 4x4 up to 48x72 inches, and in 1/8" flat formats, as well as cradle depths of ¾", 1.5", and 2".
